Clover mites are a common pest problem that can cause significant damage to homes and businesses. These minuscule pests can be hard to spot, yet their presence is often revealed by the ruddy blotches left on walls or furnishings.

What are clover mites?

Clover mites, minuscule arachnids of a crimson hue, subsist upon clovers and other types of grass. They measure less than 1 millimeter in length and have eight legs. The front pair of legs are very long and often mistaken for antennae, duping some homeowners into thinking they have an ant infestation.

Clover mite activity increases as temperatures fall. The mites search for a warm place to shelter, which can be your home and business. You’re most likely to find them in the fall as outdoor plant life dies and the temperatures plummet. The mites must eat plant matter to survive, so if you have a lot of houseplants, you may be at extra risk for these tiny pets. Clover mites lay eggs that hatch in thirty days, making them tricky to completely kill before they spread.

Are clover mites dangerous?

Clover mites are not dangerous to humans, as they do not bite and cannot spread illnesses. It’s possible that someone could have an allergy to them, but those cases are individual-specific and uncommon. Clover mites present more of a danger to property, especially when large amounts of them can break into a structure. When squished, these mites leave behind a red, rust-like stain that can damage carpets, wood, vinyl, and fabric alike.

Why do I have a clover mite problem?

Do you take fantastic care of your lawn and garden? If so, you may be welcoming clover mites in. While you shouldn’t stop caring for your property, you should know that clover mites are attracted to well-fertilized lawns and gardens.

If you have cracks in your siding or window frames, clover mites will be able to enter your home with ease. They especially like sunny spots, and you may find initial infestations in the southernmost parts of your house. It’s easier for them to inhabit upper levels of buildings where they’re less likely to be detected, so keep an eye on your attic and roof.

Clover mites will attempt to return outdoors when the weather gets warmer, but by then, they have likely caused damage to your home already. It’s best to handle the mites when you see them rather than wait them out for better weather.

Where will I find clover mites?

Clover mites tend to congregate in large numbers around windowsills or door frames. During cold winter months, these pests will migrate indoors through cracks or crevices in search of warmth and food sources such as pet food or spilled crumbs on kitchen counters or floors. The eggs and larvae can be found in concrete cracks and beneath shingles.

How can I prevent clover mites in the future?

Exclusion is the most effective way to prevent clover mite infestations. Seal any cracks, crevices, or gaps in walls and foundations with caulk or other appropriate materials. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens. Keep shrubs and trees trimmed away from buildings, as clover mites often hide in these areas during the day.

Inspect your home to see if mites are hiding in the siding or any cracks. Install or repair window screens to keep them flush with paneling and free of any gaps. Vacuum linens, sheets, drapes, and curtains to remove the mites without staining your belongings.
